L’Arche Stratford began in 1973 in the former convent at St. Joseph Catholic Church. Marjorie Pickersgill, the founding Community Leader, along with 4 other Assistants welcomed founding Core Member, Gary McCrea. The community expanded quickly in the early days by welcoming one Core Member a month.

The community currently has 6 homes and assists a number of people in Supported Independent Living models to create opportunities for people living with and without intellectual disabilities to thrive, work, and celebrate the gift of life through mutually transformative relationships.

In total, the community supports approximately persons with intellectual disabilities. In addition, L’Arche Stratford offers daytime activities to over 50 people from the surrounding area. The Be Belong Become capital campaign is underway which will see the construction of a new 13,000 sq. ft. community hub dedicated to people living with intellectual disabilities.

L’Arche Winnipeg has been creating homes and social opportunities for people with intellectual disabilities since 1973. Today the community has 6 homes, 2 apartments, and runs the L'Arche Tova Café.

L'Arche Saskatoon has two homes, Christopher House and Alma House, each of which are home to four people with intellectual disabilities and four live-in assistants.

L’Arche Lethbridge opened its first home, Chinook House, on November 1, 1991. Today, the community consists of three homes where four adults with intellectual disabilities and three or four assistants live in each home.

L’Arche Greater Vancouver

Established in 1974, L’Arche Greater Vancouver is a community of approximately 85 people. In addition to two community inclusion programs, the community consists of 18 people with intellectual disabilities and those who assist them in four homes.

Established in 1972, L’Arche Edmonton was the second L'Arche community founded in Canada. There are currently six L’Arche homes and a day program in Edmonton and Sherwood Park.

L’Arche Saint John started in 2005 with McKim House, named in memory of George and Charlotte McKim, whose dedication played a key role in bringing L’Arche to New Brunswick. Creative Connections, a lively artistic day program, and L'Arche Connects, a supported independent living program have been launched since then.

L’Arche Homefires began in Wolfville, a small University town located about one hour west of Halifax, Nova Scotia, in 1981. They are a community of 5 homes in the local area, a candle-making workshop (Applewicks), a day program (Cornerstone) and a small retirement program (Discoveries).

L’Arche Cape Breton was founded in 1983. Today there are six houses, an apartment, a chapel, a hermitage, a house of welcome and retreat, and a full work program called L’Arche Works, including a used clothing store, a workshop, an accessible garden, a day program, and an integrated work placement program with the local businesses.
